Position Overview

As a part-time ELA Tutor at arenaflex, you will deliver personalized, in-home instructional sessions to students in the Chattanooga area, focusing on reading comprehension, writing composition, language arts fundamentals, and homework preparation. You will work closely with students, parents, and our administrative team to design learning experiences that align with each learner's unique needs, goals, and learning style.

This is more than a tutoring role — it is an opportunity to inspire young minds, build lifelong skills, and become a trusted mentor in your community. Whether you are a retired educator seeking meaningful part-time work, a graduate student gaining hands-on teaching experience, or a professional educator looking to supplement your income, arenaflex offers a flexible, supportive environment where your expertise is valued and your impact is celebrated.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver Engaging One-on-One Instruction: Provide high-quality, individualized ELA tutoring sessions to middle school and high school students in their homes, focusing on reading fluency, reading comprehension, written composition, grammar, vocabulary, language mechanics, and test preparation strategies.
  • Customize Learning Plans: Assess each student's academic strengths, weaknesses, and learning preferences to develop tailored lesson plans that address specific educational needs and accelerate progress toward learning goals.
  • Support Homework and Test Preparation: Assist students with daily homework assignments, long-term projects, study skills development, and standardized test preparation, including strategies for managing test anxiety and improving performance under pressure.
  • Maintain Detailed Session Reports: Complete and submit comprehensive session reports to the arenaflex office and to the student's family within twenty-four hours of each tutoring session, documenting progress, challenges, and next steps.
  • Manage Student Schedule Effectively: Balance tutoring hours for each assigned student in accordance with their enrollment package, ensuring consistent engagement and optimal use of contracted tutoring time.
  • Communicate Professionally with Stakeholders: Address questions, concerns, and requests from existing clients in a timely, courteous, and professional manner, building strong relationships with families and maintaining arenaflex's reputation for excellence.
  • Monitor Enrollment Hours: Proactively follow up with the arenaflex office when a student's enrollment package is running low on hours, supporting continuity of service and uninterrupted learning.
  • Maintain Professional Boundaries: Accept and service only those students whose educational needs align with your expertise, qualifications, and availability, ensuring the highest quality of instruction and student-tutor compatibility.
  • Stay Current with Best Practices: Continuously refine your teaching methods, stay informed about current educational standards and curriculum expectations, and integrate evidence-based instructional strategies into your tutoring practice.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Educational Experience: A minimum of two years of professional experience in the education field, including teaching, tutoring, or related instructional roles, is strongly preferred.
  • Specialized Tutoring Experience: At least two years of experience tutoring or teaching in specialized education areas, particularly in language arts, English, reading, or writing instruction, is highly desirable.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Demonstrated proficiency in high school and middle school composition, reading comprehension strategies, language arts curriculum, reading fluency techniques, and general homework preparation support.
  • Lesson Planning Skills: Ability to prepare structured, goal-oriented lesson plans tailored to each student's individual learning needs, academic level, and personal interests.
  • Adaptability and Personality: A warm, engaging personality that resonates with a diverse range of students, including those who may struggle with motivation, confidence, or attention.
  • Administrative Competence: Strong organizational and administrative skills, including the ability to manage schedules, track student progress, and complete required documentation accurately and on time.
  • Technical Proficiency: Comfortable using basic database and data entry systems, with strong typing skills, familiarity with personal computers, and the ability to maintain accurate session records.
  • Reliable Transportation: Must have reliable personal transportation, a valid driver's license, and current automobile insurance to travel to student homes throughout the Chattanooga, Signal Mountain, and Hixson areas.

  • Current or former teaching credential or certification in English Language Arts or a related subject area.
  • A graduate degree (Master's or Doctorate) in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or a relevant humanities discipline.
  • Experience working with students who have learning differences, ADHD, dyslexia, or other unique learning needs.
  • Familiarity with state-specific curriculum standards, standardized testing requirements, and college readiness benchmarks.
  • Prior experience with educational technology platforms, virtual tutoring tools, or digital learning resources.

Essential Skills and Competencies
