Why This Role Matters – The Heartbeat of Our Dock Operations

Our dock teams are the engine that keeps the supply chain moving. As an Entry-Level Freight Handling & Data Entry Associate, you will be the critical link between incoming shipments and outbound deliveries. You will ensure that freight is safely moved, accurately documented, and securely loaded, while providing courteous assistance to our customers and internal partners. This role is perfect for individuals who thrive in a physical, detail‑oriented environment and who are eager to learn the fundamentals of logistics, safety, and customer service.

Key Responsibilities – What You’ll Do Every Day

  • Freight Movement: Operate motorized and manual equipment—including forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks—to transport freight across the dock area and into/out of trailers.
  • Documentation Accuracy: Verify that electronic or paper documentation matches the freight description (type, weight, hazardous status) and update records in real time.
  • Secure Loading: Use pallets, straps, rope, and other securing tools to safely fasten freight inside trailers, preventing shift or damage during transit.
  • Damage Control: Identify damaged items, perform basic repairs when possible, and document any discrepancies for further action.
  • Customer Interaction: Assist customers with freight inquiries, provide clear explanations of documentation, and ensure a positive dock experience.
  • Hostling Duties (When Required): Support yard operations by moving trailers, positioning equipment, and performing other hostling tasks as needed.
  • Compliance & Safety: Follow all applicable laws, regulations, and arenaflex policies, including safety protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, and reporting procedures.
  • Continuous Improvement: Participate in daily briefings, suggest process enhancements, and contribute to a culture of safety and efficiency.
  • Additional Tasks: Perform any other duties assigned by supervisors to support dock productivity and team goals.

Essential Qualifications – What We’re Looking For

  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred but not mandatory).
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • Basic math skills – ability to count, weigh, and calculate freight dimensions with or without a calculator.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Physical capability to lift and carry hand freight of varying weights, handle dock plates up to 100 lb, and open trailer doors requiring approximately 75 lb of force, repeatedly throughout the shift.
  • Flexibility to bend, twist, squat, push, and pull freight safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Prior exposure to warehouse or dock environments, freight handling, or forklift operation is a plus.
  • Experience with hostling or yard mule duties is advantageous but not required.

Preferred Qualifications – How You Can Stand Out

  • Certification or training in forklift operation (e.g., OSHA‑approved certification).
  • Experience using electronic data capture (EDC) systems or warehouse management software.
  • Knowledge of hazardous material handling regulations (e.g., DOT, OSHA).
  • Demonstrated reliability and punctuality in previous employment.
  • Customer‑service experience, especially in a logistics or transportation setting.

Core Skills & Competencies – Success Factors for This Role

  • Attention to Detail: Accurate documentation and careful inspection of freight are essential to prevent errors and ensure safety.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to sustain a high level of activity throughout an 8‑hour shift, including lifting, walking, and operating equipment.
  • Safety Mindset: Commitment to following safety protocols, reporting hazards, and using PPE correctly.
  • Team Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills to coordinate with dock supervisors, drivers, and customers.
  • Problem‑Solving: Quick identification of issues such as mismatched paperwork or damaged freight, and proactive resolution.
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to adjust to changing schedules, weather conditions, and operational demands.
