Job Summary The Nurse Informaticist transforms data into needed information and leverages technologies to improve health and healthcare equity, safety, quality, and outcomes. They have specialized knowledge and expertise in health informatics, a multidisciplinary field that combines nursing science with information management and analytical sciences. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to implementing and optimizing health information systems, data management and analytics, training and education, quality improvement, project management, policy and compliance, communication, and research as applied to improving patient care and optimizing nursing workflows. The Nursing Informatics department at Michigan Medicine works collaboratively with all of Nursing, Allied Health Partners, Office of Clinical Informatics, and Health Information Technology and Services, across all patient care areas to assess, plan, integrate and execute clinical technologies across patient care. This team helps develop policy, procedure, and workflows to enhance proficiency and effectiveness in a manner consistent with the enterprise level model of care, ideal patient care experience, and approved standards of care, while utilizing informatics principles and tools, particularly in relation to the Electronic Health Record. Responsibilities• Under minimal supervision, the candidate will Assessment Collect comprehensive data and information to understand current state workflows for technical systems hospitals use in their daily work including but not limited to the electronic health record, communication devices, patient monitoring devices, and medication management devices. This includes utilizing reports and dashboards to obtain relevant information. Diagnosis, problems, and issues identification Analyzes assessment data to help identify the root cause of the problem and where opportunities for improvement should be focused. Functions as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in nursing technology workflows. Outcomes identification Leads a team to identify expected outcomes and measure results of implementations. Planning and Implementation Utilizes project management skills to independently lead hospital changes. Helps plan technology improvements throughout the system development life cycle (SDLC) including planning, analysis, testing, creation of application reference material, training, implementation, support, and maintenance phases of the project. The training includes partnering with unit educators to train staff on application optimizations, software solutions, and devices. (E.g., Epic (MiChart), Rover, and clinical iPhone usage) Evaluation Works with end-users to ensure the implemented technology solutions meet the workflow and technical needs. Collaborate with hospital leadership to ensure technology solutions meet hospital strategic plans. Ethics Uses knowledge of informatics and ethics to evaluate factors related to privacy, security, and confidentiality in the use and handling of data and information. This includes following HIPAA regulations and working with Information Assurance (IA) to provide a mature and safe clinical IT (Information Technology) environment. Culture, Communication, and Collaboration Effectively collaborate with nurses, physicians, clinical users, and hospital leadership via email, during collaborative meetings, and when presenting in front of large groups to ensure enterprise, organization, and project goals are met. Candidates will participate in all activities with interrelated teams. Partnering with the University of Michigan Schools, including the School of Nursing, on projects such as educating nursing students, predictive analytics, machine learning and research initiatives will be required. Resource utilization Employs appropriate resources to plan and implement informatics and associated services that are safe, effective, and fiscally responsible. Required Qualifications• BSN Experience includes 2+ years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and expertise AND 3+ years with a combination of nursing informatics, project management, or nursing leadership experience Clinical experience that has provided the opportunity to demonstrate competencies in clinical care, information technology, leadership, education, and staff development required.
