DESCRIPTION The UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS) is an interdisciplinary, discovery-driven graduate school focusing on international affairs and public policy. We offer an original and rigorous approach to policy, as our goal is to create global policy solutions that matter. GPS instructs a diverse student body of domestic and international students in the MPP, MCEPA, MIA, and MAS-IA degree programs, a joint Ph.D. with the Department of Political Science and executive education programs. GPS also administers the International Studies Program, offering a rigorous curriculum for students interested in international affairs with nine B.A. degree options, three combined BA/MIA and BA/MPP programs, and a minor program. The Admissions Recruitment Specialist works closely with the Director and Associate Directors on all aspects of the admissions and recruitment process and must demonstrate a clear understanding of professionalism working on campus and in all recruitment locations. The incumbent is expected to perform recruitment activities as assigned and to evaluate applications to GPS degree programs using established guidelines. The admissions recruitment specialist will provide in-depth information about GPS degree programs using familiarity with the GPS core education requirements and specific opportunities for specialization within the areas of public policy and international affairs. The incumbent must fully understand and communicate the mosaic of financial aid opportunities for domestic applicants while being equally up-to-date on programs and opportunities for funding inside UC San Diego and throughout the broader policy community including relevant agencies and groups offering funding opportunities in international affairs and policy. The incumbent will also work with international applicants communicating the same while being sensitive to the unique challenges encountered by international students as regards housing and career opportunities. Using professional knowledge of the campus policies and procedures, the Admissions and Recruitment Specialist connects prospective students and applicants to university resources and ensures follow-through and expeditious communication. They will need to exhibit strong professional judgment, utilizing established guidelines, to determine the strength of prospective inquiries and applications to degree programs, and connecting individuals to relevant school and campus resources. The incumbent must always operate with discretion and a clear understanding of diverse cultures and backgrounds such that all applicants to GPS degree programs receive clear and concise information. The incumbent is expected to demonstrate the utmost professionalism in all interactions with colleagues, applicants, and prospective students. The Admissions and Recruitment specialist will use professional judgement to review and evaluate applications, recommending candidates using established guidelines. They will be expected to evaluate domestic and international applications using the admissions committee rubric ensuring international applications meet all minimum requirements for English proficiency. The incumbent is expected to consult on complex applications requiring exceptions or presenting outside the norm. The incumbent will write and edit electronic and paper-based communications using targeted writing styles that emphasize the value of a GPS graduate education. They will create social media posts, engage with prospective students and applicants via the CRM, and various cloud-based communication and scheduling platforms relevant to the effort. The Admissions and Recruitment Specialist supports and assists in coordinating yield and recruitment events in person and online while supporting the planning and execution of the annual recruitment calendar. With support from the Director and Associate Directors, they develop and implement communication for yield as well as targeted outreach to inquiries, and prospects in the Slate admissions database.

  • Position requires substantial travel, including to some domestic locations where public transportation is limited. Must have access to reliable transportation.
  • Must be able to travel for extended periods and represent the University at various off-campus locations.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid passport and/or REAL ID for domestic and international travel as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of complex and broadly written guidelines governing evaluation, admission, and deferral of graduate and transfer applicants, both domestic and international.
  • Working knowledge of higher education, and the ability to interpret policies and procedures to prospective applicants and the public.
  • Working knowledge of academic programs, including curricula, admissions requirements, and financial aid programs at UC or other Universities.
  • Working knowledge of admissions requirements for campus / school / college.
  • Proficient in navigating highly computerized environments, with demonstrated capability in utilizing databases, customer relationship management (CRM) systems (such as Slate), and spreadsheet software to manage, query, and analyze applicant data.
  • Demonstrated experience with data collection, management and analysis of data, using web tools, relational databases, statistical software and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with schools, universities, community organizations and other institutions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Strong writing and editing skills for the preparation of grammatically correct, logical and concise working and informational manuals, administrative reports, correspondence and program text.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of students and staff on campus, off-campus counselors, administrators, multicultural and non-traditional populations
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills; proven ability to set priorities which accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities and take into consideration deadlines, competing requirements and complexity.
  • Knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population.
  • Excellent public speaking skills with demonstrated ability to persuasively engage small and large audiences.
