Join a Dynamic Team of Innovators in Pediatrics Hematology/Oncology Research

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Project Scientist to join the Jonas Lab in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA. As a key member of our interdisciplinary research team, you will contribute to the development of innovative nanotechnology-enabled methods for childhood cancer and regenerative medicine research. This is an exceptional opportunity to work at the interface of nanoscience and regenerative medicine, driving the discovery and implementation of gene and cellular therapeutic approaches and precision-medicine-based diagnostic strategies.

Job Summary

The successful candidate will have a strong background in bioengineering, materials science, or cell and gene therapy development, with a desire to grow as an early-stage investigator, mentor trainees, and transition to scientific independence. You will be responsible for leading and coordinating project activities, overseeing the development of technology platforms, and contributing to multiple collaborative projects. Your expertise will be essential in establishing rapid, safe, and efficient intracellular delivery methods for genes and genome-editing machinery, designing inhalable nanocarrier systems, and developing microfluidic liquid biopsy technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate project activities and collaborative efforts
  • Oversee the development of technology platforms for cellular therapy manufacturing, nanoparticle vehicles, organoids, and liquid biopsy diagnostic tests
  • Contribute to multiple collaborative projects, including the design and application of CRISPR/Cas9 and base/prime gene editing tools
  • Mentor and supervise undergraduate, graduate, and medical students, new postdoctoral trainees, and staff research associates
  • Communicate effectively with other scientists, regulatory personnel, biotech companies, and sponsored research organizations
  • Participate in laboratory meetings, educational sessions, and training sessions

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in Bioengineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Molecular Biology, or related life science fields
  • Prior postdoctoral training in bioengineering, materials science, or cell and gene therapy development
  • Strong background in nanoparticle synthesis and characterization, mRNA therapeutics, and micro/nanofabrication techniques
  • Experience with cell culture, transfection, immunofluorescence/flow cytometry, and biochemical and molecular biology techniques
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a diverse, interdisciplinary research environment

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary range: $71,500 - $188,400 per year
  • Opportunity to work with a dynamic team of innovators in pediatrics hematology/oncology research
  • Support from the NIH's High-Risk High-Reward Program
  • Access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment
  • Professional development opportunities, including mentorship and training

How to Apply

If you are a motivated and experienced researcher looking to join a dynamic team, please submit your application, including your CV, cover letter, and statements of research, teaching, and contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion. We look forward to receiving your application!
